I was awarded a Watson Fellowship for the 2007-2008 year. The Watson Foundation awards fellowships to people to go off and do cool things. The rules are that you have to go out of the country for year... and that's pretty much it.
My project was called "From Farm to Fork: Eating in the Wake of the Green Revolution" and my official project description is:
"The Green Revolution, a series of agricultural reforms that began in the 1960s, has changed the lives of millions of people worldwide. In my project, I will study the impact of wheat hybridization in Mexico, France, and India. By spending time working with farmers, cooks, scientists, and political groups I will explore the effects these changes have had on farming techniques, cuisine, and agricultural politics worldwide. "
I left the country in June of 2007 and returned at the end of July in 2008. I ate, talked over life, met those who cared to be met, and just generally rocked and rolled for 14 months. My project countries were Mexico, France, India, Italy and Egypt.
I kept a travel blog that detailed the adventure. It can be found by clicking here or going to blog.mylifeinlines.com.
